The Aftermath: Secrets of Thuria

The Aftermath by James Todd Lewis

The second main entry of James Todd Lewis’s Thuria Saga occurs shortly after its predecessor, with the vessel Tashar departing the planet Thuria in search of self-aware life, its chief inhabitant, Theo, having rescued Van and Sahni, who in turn rescued hundreds from a meeting den. The main events open with Sahni missing Theo and continuing her work at Van’s catering business. Van must come to terms with her past, furthermore, although she is reluctant to visit the estate of her mother’s death. Many of the planet’s prominent houses conspire in the meantime, with Van being an Anati, one of mixed race, frowned upon on the world.

Sahni is also offered the position as a matron of her family, although she’s reluctant to accept the offer, even though it comes with amenities such as her own lair. Some individuals wish to expose the conspiracies on Thuria, with another character, Kylie, espousing her past, and the ending somewhat tying in to Trials of the Teldear. Overall, this is another enjoyable entry of the series, although analogies to Earth animals would have been welcome, and the list of dramatis personae before instead of after the main text, as with before, would have definitely been helpful, at that. Even so, those who enjoyed other books in the series will likely enjoy this one.
