Three Days to Forever

Before the main text, author Lauren Carr notes that she takes a different path with this entry of the Mac Faraday Mystery series, although she assures there are still crimes to solve, the plot will be thrilling, and bear a terrorism-centric narrative that allegedly has commentary on contemporary issues, although the book itself mercifully strays away from direct political musing, in spite of some religious insight towards the end. She dedicates the novel to the men and women in the American military, and follows with an extensive list of dramatis personae in order of appearance, living and deceased in the story’s chronology.

Following an epigraph that simply includes a Robert Frost quote, the prologue takes the events eighteen months before the primary plotline, in a desert outside Baghdad, Iraq, where soldiers are spying on a terrorist camp where insurgent leader Jassem al-Baghdadi is, the American military unit to take him out known as the Phantoms, similar to the Untouchables in crime. Among the discoveries during the raid is the cadaver of General Affleck, a Muslim who committed suicide and was working secretly for the terrorists. The main text follows, occurring from December 29 to 31 in three parts.

One of the story’s chief settings is Spencer Manor in Deep Creek Lake, a resort area in Western Maryland, home to the late novelist Robin Spencer, whose son, Mac Faraday, occupies her estate, during which prosecuting attorney Joshua Thornton meets an Afghan Muslim writer named Abdul Kochar, who breaks the terroristic Islamic stereotype perpetrated throughout American society. Mac is set to marry a former editor and assistant to his mother, Archie Monday, although several terrorist-centric events occur that threaten these plans. Overall, this is an enjoyable novel that isn’t overly-preachy, and gives good commentary on religious relations towards the end, accounting for a recommended read.
